Theme Description |
There are only few attestations for scenes illustrating the making of pottery in the tombs of both the Old (See: OEE 10.7) and the Middle Kingdom. However, the earlier examples feature a richness of detail and reflect a step-by-step documentation of the process.
Seven work steps are necessary to produce a vessel made of clay. First of all the raw material has to be collected (not depicted) and the clay is then prepared by means of kneading and wedging. Afterwards, the vessels are being shaped. Several shaping methods are reproduced in the two-dimensional art. In the Old Kingdom, the use of a simple turning device as well the use of a simple low wheel are shown (compare: Épron, L. and Daumas, L., Le Tombeau de Ti, Fascicule I, pl. LXXI), whereas in the earlier period the turning device disappears and a tall-stemmed simple wheel starts to be depicted in the late 12th dynasty. After shaping, the vessels are arranged to dry and subsequently their surface might be treated. Thereafter, the pottery comes into the oven to be fired out. The final work step is an aftertreatment, but such scenes are part of other themes like brewing, where beer jars are made ready before use.
For pottery making scenes see esp.: Arnold, D., Wandbild und Scherbenfund. Zur Töpfertechnik der alten Ägypter vom Beginn der pharaonischen Zeit bis zu den Hyksos, in: MDAIK 32 (1976), pp. 1 – 34.
