Theme Description
Carpentry has already been popular in the official´s tombs of the Old Kingdom as at least 30 examples are known from that period (see: OEE 10.1). It also remains to be an inherent part of the decoration in the First Intermediate Period as well as in the Middle Kingdom. The scenes of carpentry do not represent a real sequence of work steps in order to show the manufacture of a single object (see: Drenkhahn, R., Die Handwerker und ihre Tätigkeiten im Alten Ägypten, p. 97). They rather demonstrate various tasks in combination with the presentation of diverse objects made of wood. Manufacture of coffins, beds and shrines, baskets and board-games as well as production of staffs, bows and arrows is depicted. Tools that are used include a saw, chisel, mallet, adze, axe and polishing stones.
