theme description
Scenes representing the preparation and cooking of meat, fowl and fish were especially popular in the Old Kingdom (see OEE 9), but remained to be depicted in the Middle Kingdom as well. The activities comprise gutting, plucking, portioning and drying as well as boiling/stewing in cooking pots and roasting on spits. Several types of hearths and braziers are illustrated and there is even a unique Middle Kingdom representation of roasting on a revolving spit (tomb of Ukhhotep II at Meir). Cooking is clearly dominated by men as only male cooks are involved.
